SS #8: YA Heroines

This Week's Topic: YA Heroines

I'm so sorry I haven't posted a SS post in so long. Like seriously, what has it been... 3 months? Anyway, I'm really sorry, I completely forgot about it, and I'd been so busy with my other posts that I just kind of forgot about this one. BUT, on the bright side, I'm posting now! And, to top that, I have a cute new logo. If you like the idea of the Saturday Scoop, feel free to use it on your own blog, that would be awesome :)

Soooo! This week's topic: YA heroines.

If you're an avid reader of YA as I am, then you probably know that a recurring problem in YA books these days is the heroines that authors include in the books. Some of them are kick-ass assassins (take Celeana from Throne of Glass or Ismae from Grave Mercy) or Hunger Games tributes (Katniss, Clove, Glimmer, Rue, Johanna, etc.) or just intelligent, witty girls (Kami Glass from Unspoken). And yet some of them aren't. Some of them are weak, pathetic idiots who just give up everything and act stupid all because of a boy.

As a feminist, I strongly oppose these heroines. Sometimes if the book is good but the heroine is pathetic, then it will completely turn me off from the book because I can't stand it when main characters are like this. Take for example Isabella Swan, from *dun dun dun* the infamous Twilight series.  I've only read the first book in this series. (I know, I know. . . crazy, but don't get on me for that. The series just didn't interest me.) But from what I did read, Bella was a crazy, stupid lunatic who was unhealthily obsessed with some vampire guy who kept being like, "Don't love me! I'm dangerous!"

*gag*

Anyhow, as you can see, these types of heroines annoy me greatly. Not only are they annoying to read about, but they're also demeaning to women. People could read that and think, "Oh, this is what teenage girls are like nowadays." And it's offensive. Really really really offensive, because we're not. I mean some girls are shallow and all that, but the vast majority of us are good, awesome people who if we were faced with the situation that the girls in books have would choose the smart, intelligent thing to do.

In the book I'm reading right now, Tiger's Curse, the heroine is horrid. Not only is she juvenile, stupid, and sounds like she's straight out of a Jane Austen novel, she is also constently obsessing over her tiger boyfriend Ren and etc. It just annoys the heck out of me. (Oh, expect a lovely review.)

I'm not trying to say that authors should steer away from romance. I love romance books. I think that sometimes when authors are writing romance books, they get too bogged down on the main character's reaction to the romance, rather than who the girl actually is. For example, some of the girls have absolutely no identity, no personality. the only thing we know about them is that they're with this guy. And not all the guys are bad. Take Ellie from Angelfire. She was personality-less. And yeah, ok, she was "kick-ass" in the sense that she killed monster-type things. But I hated her. And in fact, I liked Will, the guy she was with.

Ooh! Ooh! A better example of a personality-less character would be Luce from Fallen! Ahh, perfect. I can't believe i didn't think of that sooner. She was stupid, obsessed, and just all-around annoying when it came to her love interest, in this case he was a horrible angel Daniel. Exactly what she saw in him I have no idea. But this book was an offensive portrayal of females and this character if she was real I would smack her so hard in the face that she'd never see the light of day again (whoah, violent much? sorry).

Ok, I'm done ranting now, but do you see my point?  I hope I'm not the only one who feels this way because that would really suck if I was.

SS#7: Boys Who Read

This Week's Topic: Boys Who Read

Boys Who Read. To me, at least, it's becoming less and less of a true statement, at least at my school. At my old school, there were guys everywhere with their noses stuck in some sort of book. But this year I've realized that my old school was quite different, more on the quirky side, while at my new school, all the boys do is text and...text. It makes me sad.  The girls, too, don't read often either. It seems like I am the only one in a grade of nearly 60 students that appreciates a good book.

So I kind of borrowed this off of Book Adoration, (I hope that's ok), but it was too beautiful and awesome to not share with you guys. ^^ If posting this isn't ok with Lottie then I will take it down.

I mean, how amazing is that?

That made me realize that boys who read are valuable.  I will always date a guy who reads, will definitely MARRY a guy who reads.  I've realized that guys who read have this really sweet, valuable sense to them that guys who don't read just don't have (in the same way). I'm not trying to be mean to guys who don't read, I'm just saying that guys who read are incredibly special.

I hope you take this message to heart and see what I am saying. :)

SS #6: Sisterhood ♥

This Week's Topic: Sisterhood ♥

So for the past few months, my older sister, who's 10 years older than I am, has been teaching English in Jordan in the Middle East. I hadn't seen her since August, until today, when she came back from her excursion. She'll go back again in a few weeks, but seeing her again made me think about how valuable sisters are.

As we related the past few months to each other, talking about teaching, the Middle East (her), middle school dances, books (me), I realized how important it was to connect with someone like that, in a sister kind of way. If you have a sister you might know what I mean. Sometimes sisters fight or get on each other's nerves, but that's just part of being a sister. (Believe me, my sister and I do NOT have a perfect relationship. We have had countless fights over the silliest things.) 

I think sisterhood, or at least sibling-hood (Not sure that's a word...), is an integral part of each person's life. If you're an only child, then surely you've known someone who you've looked up to, who you've thought of as a kind of sister or a kind of brother. I'm definitely glad that my parents chose to have so many kids, because my siblings are such a vital part of my life. I would be a completely different person without my sister, without my brothers for that matter. 

It's not only sisterhood I'm talking about. Brotherhood is equally as important. I'm not as close as my second brother as I am with my first, but I definitely felt joy and happiness for him when he got into college yesterday, early decision. I've watched my older siblings through so many things. And now that all of them have gone through high school, gotten accepted into college, and two of them are out of college and in the real world now, It's my turn to do what they have done for me, for a 'little sister' that I don't have. I'll never be in their place, unfortunately. But they have done so much for me.

SS #5: Insights Involving Facebook and Social Networking

This Week's Topic: Facebook

Unless you've been away on some magical quest involving fairies and fallen angels and whatnot (sorry, I'm in that kind of mood today), you know about Facebook. Um, who doesn't know about Facebook? Not calling people who don't freaks or anything, but you must've been living under a rock. Or never exposed to the Internet. Which would make no sense, since you're reading this online right now (I hope...?). Okay, I'll get to the point here :p. Facebook is not only popular, people are using it in obscene ways, posting obscene pictures with obscene captions, and not thinking before they post anything. 

I've noticed, through my own experiences and others', that it's a lot easier to open up online than it is in real life. Say someone who I'd never met in real life talked to me online. They'd get a completely different impression of me. While outside of the Internet, I would tend to be quiet or non-talkative, inside of the Internet, I would be more talkative like I am here on my blog, because let's face it: When it's me and a keyboard, my fingers fly 100 words per minute and I can't stop writing, writing, writing, writing. It's getting stuff from my brain to a keyboard that's the most important to me. Usually, it works better when I'm typing or writing, not talking out loud. I have some auditory issues, so maybe that's part of the reason why.

But what I just talked about for a whole paragraph and a half, is not really about Facebook. I'm gettting to Facebook now. I don't have a Facebook, nor will I until I go to high school, I'm guessing. But I've watched my brothers and sister and mom use it, and I know it can be (almost) as addicting as Goodreads, which is basically like my Facebook, minus the "face" part. Lol. Anyway, people just love Facebook so much they might end up posting some ridiculous things there without thinking. I know what they're NOT thinking: "If I saw this on a friend's wall, would I be skeptical of this?" No. The people who post the weird stuff (Not only just inappropriate or sexual pictures, but just random, weird "why the hell would you post that" pictures) aren't thinking that. They're thinking, but they're thinking something completely out of that realm. You get me? So while they are physically thinking, they're just not thinking STRAIGHT. 

So if this long and probably boring rant made any sense to you, I hope I give you something to take away from this blog and share with your family or friends, because i'm sooo insightful (just kidding, just kidding). Have a nice Saturday! 

SS #4: Girl Power

This Week's Topic: Girl Power

I know I said my previous post was going to be my SS post for the week, but I have time to do a real SS post after all! So this week's topic is going to be girl power.

The past couple months, I've realized how awesome it is to be a girl. We've come so far in the past century. It wasn't too long ago when we were in skin-tight corsets that practically asphyxiated and

could not "speak unless spoken to". My role models are some of the feminists in the early 20th century, because let's face it, they were awesome.  And now, there are some really awesome books out there featuring kick-ass heroines and examples of real girl power.

I was thinking about the book "Looking For Alaska" by John Green. One of my favorite books. Oh, it was amazing. Alaska was messed up in a lot of ways, but was so feminist that a reader could not help but love her. For example, this line (this is a rap she's making up of the top of her head):

“Oh shit did you just diss the feminine gender
I'll pummel your ass then stick you in a blender
You think I like Tori and Ani so I can't rhyme
But I got flow like Ghostbusters got slime
Objectify women and it's fuckin' on
You'll be dead and gone like ancient Babylon.”

I'm not going to even remove the expletives from that quote, because that's who Alaska is. And I love that quote. So much. 

This next quote is from Pride & Prejudice. I love that book, as you might already know, and even though it was written at a time when women were still considered unequal to men, Jane Austen manages to stealthily squeeze in a few feminist lines from her beloved heroine, Elizabeth Bennet. 

[Miss Bingley:] "Oh! certainly," cried his faithful assistant, "no [woman] can be really esteemed accomplished who does not greatly surpass what is usually met with.  A woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages, to deserve the word; and besides all this, she must possess a certain something in her air and manner of walking, the tone of her voice, her address and expressions, or the word will be but half-deserved."

"All this she must possess," added Darcy, "and to all this she must yet add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading."

[Elizabeth Bennet:] "I am no longer surprised at your knowing only six accomplished women.  I rather wonder now at your knowing any." 

What's not to love here? Jane, you're amazing. Jane, you're awesome!! 

Ok, so I've given you two feminist quotes from books, but the only feminist moments aren't in books. The other day, in History class, we were talking about Abigail Adams and how she was telling her husband to grant women rights. I'm like, 'Yeah, Abby! Way to go!" but then there's this reallllyyy annoying kid who sits near me and he's mumbling sexist things under his breath but everyone can hear him. My teacher hears him, too. She says, "Hey... You're never gonna get a wife if you keep saying those things." Yeah! I know that's not the best example of a feminist moment, but it's still awesome. I'm not going to mention the part where I said a little too loudly, "You're not going to get a wife anyway," and the teacher goes, "Okay, okay, I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that, miss." Oh, oops. Guess I just did mention it. Whatever. 

Anyway, my theory is when boys "diss the feminine gender" it's because they're afraid of us girls, and they're worried about being outsmarted and getting their ass kicked by girls. :P So yeah, I just needed to post this, because it's a really important subject to me. And if you're a dude, I'm not saying that you're lower than girls or anything like that. I'm just pissed with all of those careless jerks who don't think about what they're saying before they say it. Girl power all the way! 

SS #3: Taylor Swift

This Week's Topic: Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift.  What comes to mind when you think of the curly-haired country pop singer?  No doubt you think of some of her songs: ranging from full-out country ("Mean") to full-out pop ("I Knew You Were Trouble").

Well, if you know me well enough, you would know that she is one of my role models and that I look up to her.  She's brilliant, fearless, an amazing songwriter, and has awesome fashion sense.  It's hard not to like her, wouldn't you agree? She's America's sweetheart, in simple words.

When she was 16 years old, her first album was released.  The songs were all completely country, and she sang with a southern accent.  Most of them were about break-ups she had with guys, or general experiences she'd had.  Her next album, Fearless,  was released when she was 18, and the songs were still country, and many of her hits still are popular today-- "Fearless" and "Fifteen" and "White Horse"...  Her next album, Speak Now, was released when she was 20, and the songs had taken a slightly different direction.  Some of them were still country ("Mean" for example) but the majority of them sounded more pop ("Sparks Fly", "Enchanted").  So when her newest album, Red, was released a couple weeks ago (She's 22 now), people weren't really sure what to expect.  It turns out that almost all of them are pop, and some even seem to be Indie.

For some people, they either like the new songs or they don't.  A lot of people are saying that she can't call herself a country singer anymore and refuse to listen to her new songs.  But some are open to both. Since I admire Taylor Swift, I like both kinds of her songs.  Some of her new pop songs are brilliant.  I'm a huge fan of "I Knew You Were Trouble"(reportedly about One Direction's Harry Styles...drama!!) but then, it's the songs like "Mean" that always make me feel really happy for some reason.

Even her style has slightly changed.  Most people imagine her in flowing, floral skirts and dresses, but now she's wearing tight black body cons and aggressive red lipstick, and her flowing blond locks have been cut in blunt bangs and has been straightened completely.

So that's the latest on her. But what about her music?  Now that I've obsessively listened to the album in the past weeks, I know every song by heart and could tell you the order of the songs in the album.  So I'm going to do what I'm going to call an "album review". :p I'll do a short review of each song. (Most of the reviews will be positive. :D)

State of Grace: The lyrics are beautiful, but hard to comprehend.  I've looked at the lyrics several times and gotten nothing out of them.  The message hidden in the lyrics is "I Love you doesn't count after goodbye", which I'm not really sure what to think of.  It has a very cool song and sounds a little Indie.

Red: At first, I couldn't seem to like this song, but now that I've listened to it many times, I like it.  I like the similes in it, and I think Taylor Swift would make a good writer because she has a really awesome way of expressing her emotions through her music.  The hidden message is "SAG" or at least I think that's what it is, it's a little confusing. Haha

Treacherous: This is one of my favorite songs on the album, because it has a great tune throughout the entire song.  A lot of songs have great choruses but tuneless otherwise, but every line in this song has a great tune and it's really relaxing to listen to.  Hidden message: "Won't Stop till it's over". (??) I don't really understand any of the hidden messages...

I Knew You Were Trouble: My second-favorite song on the album (I'll tell you what the first one is later).  It's definitely her most pop song so far, but the tune is so catchy that I can't help but be pretty obsessed with it.  The lyrics aren't beautiful like some of her other songs, but it's amazing and I Love it. Hidden message: "When You saw me dancing".  This song is supposedly about Harry Styles, who were apparently found making out backstage at some music awards thing. (DRAMA!)

All Too Well: Wow.  I have no words.  This song is beautiful.  That's the only word I can think of for it. The lyrics are sensational and phenomenal. I don't know how many adjectives for beautiful there are, but I would list all of them if I had the space.  Also, this song is a little more country than her other songs on this album.  Country sound, country storyline.  Hidden message: "MAPLE LATES". Don't really understand that one.

22: What I love so much about this song is it's Taylor Swift having fun.  And it's not about a guy like a lot of her other songs.  She's just having fun with her friends, and even though it's not a typical T-Swift or the least bit country, it just always makes me smile because it's so.... HAPPY. :) Hidden message: Ashley Danna Claire Selena, who I am guessing are her girlfriends.  (Selena Gomez probably...)

I Almost Do: Pretty sad song, makes me feel sad.  I guess that's good though? But it has great lyrics and a great tune.  Hidden message: I wrote this instead of calling.  Awww. Cute.  Well I think that whichever guy this one's about feels pretty good right now. Or sad. Or depressed. I don't know which.

We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together: This song's the #1 hit.  I love it.  Although, I feel like it's one of those songs that if you listen to so many times, you get an extreme headache and start to get a little sick of it.  I still love it, but I wince every time it comes on because I know it'll get stuck in my head and drive me crazy.  It was released a while ago.  Maybe if it had been released like her other songs, I would still head over heels love it.  Hidden Message: When I Stopped Caring what you thought.  Rumors say this song's about Jake Gyllenhaal. (If that's how you spell his name? )

Stay Stay Stay: Well. This is my favorite song on the album.  It's so cheerful and makes me laugh and want to cry at the same time.  Why? At first it made me laugh and go crazy with my friends whenever it came on, but when I decoded the hidden message, I want to cry now.  The message: "Daydreaming about real love".  Wha....???? I thought it was about a real guy and that she finally loved someone! And now she's just daydreaming about this adorable guy she's singing about? Now that made me really sad. But it's still an AMAZING, PHENOMENAL, AWESOME song and my favorite song of hers ever written! That will never, ever change.  My new obsession.  My forever obsession. :)

The Last Time: At first I was wary of this song because it has a guy singing half of it, and what i love about Taylor is that she's very independent.  And I didn't even like the song at first.  But now it's pretty good, I have to say.  The lyrics are kinda confusing except for the chorus.  I'm not overly enthusiastic about this song, but it's pretty good and i like it. HIdden message: LAON YOU BREAK. What the? I don't know what it means, unless I decoded it wrong.

Holy Ground: Love this song! From the beginning it was one of those sings I skipped to get to.  I've noticed that i love Taylor's songs that are cheerful and happy.  Some of the lyrics aren't totally rejoiceful, but the sound and feel of it is happy and makes me feel happy too.  Hidden message: "When you came to the show nsd" don't know what that means except for the first part?

Sad Beautiful Tragic: Every time this song comes on, I just can't do it.  It's a depressing ballad that I can't listen to without feeling utterly depressed myself.  So I usually end up skipping this song or else I'm sad for the rest of the day.  I have to say the lyrics are pretty, though.  Hidden message: "While you were on a train". That line is depressing in itself.

The Lucky One: Awesome! It has a cool, different tune than the other songs, and it's one of those songs that you want to tap your foot to sing along uncontrollably to.  I like the name of the song, though.  The lyrics, again, are confuzzling! I just don't get it.  I don't know if it's happy or sad, sarcastic maybe? I don't know!! Hidden message: "Wouldn't you like to know?" Sounds sarcastic to me... Also she has the word "Hell" in this song which is not typical for her. :p

Everything Has Changed: Ed Sheeran.  Well I fell in love with Ed Sheeran after listened to this song and listened to all his other songs.  Too bad I can't go on tour because the tickets are waaay too expensive.  I love this song :D and I haven't met anyone who didn't like this song.  Hidden message: HYANNS. I don't get it!!!!

Starlight: Like "The Lucky One", this song is cool and different.  The name also totally fits the tune.  I love the word starlight and the tone of the song is definitely starlight-y. If that even makes sense.  Hidden message: FOR ETHEL. Who's Ethel?

Begin Again: For a while I didn't realize why this song was so popular.  It's not my favorite song on the album, but now I really like it after listening to it a few more times. I like how the album ends with Begin Again, and it's about falling in love again, and that amazing feeling you get when you start to really like someone. :) Hidden message: I wear heels now.  I guess that ties in with the lyric "you didn't like it when i wore high heels"? Also, a lot of people criticize taylor Swift when she wears heels because she's already almost six feet tall, so that makes her even taller, but I think it's awesome she embraces her height.

All in all, AWESOME impressive album!!! I love it and can't stop listening to it!  Five of five stars!

SS #2: Insta-Love and Cliché Love

This Week's topic: Insta-Love and Cliché Love. 

Hello everyone! :) I hope you had a good week and that work/school didn't get you all stressed out. Anyway, let's look on the bright side-- It's the weekend and you're ready to read your weekly SS post!

This week I'm going to be talking about two different things that have been on my mind a lot lately: Insta-Love and Cliché Love. These days, you can't pick up a young adult book and not see fake, shallow insta-love and a lot of sexy British boys. I was talking to Erika on Goodreads (her blog is the awesome Living For The Books) about this today. It can be so frustrating sometimes when you pick up a book, expecting something fresh, new, and exciting, and it turns out to be just another nameless face in a library of YA books.  Yet another jaded young adult book among thousands.  Cliché love makes me sad, to tell you the truth, and here's why.

All the good ideas seemed to have been "used up". Everything that teenagers enjoy and appreciate has been snatched up by other authors, sort of like them sucking the color out of everything, or, let's make a vampire reference here, sucking the blood out of something.  And then the original product was left colorless, bloodless, bland, and flat. Where has our authors' creativity gone? Has all of it vanished, been thrown into a choppy ocean where sharp-toothed sharks (indulgent teenagers, I'm trying to be metaphoric here) will feast on them and chew them all up until they're finally all gone, and they keep getting regurgitated, and each time the ideas are regurgitated, they become weaker.

Am I confusing you yet? Please, try to bear with me here, because I feel like this idea is confusing yet it could be really interesting if I explained it well. I just feel like writers these days need serious inspiration. Onto the next topic, though, since I'll leave that one for you to think about: Insta-Love.

Insta-love is cliché, too.  It's used too much. I know the whole "love at first sight" thing is classic, but now it's starting to get out of hand. I don't think I can handle one more stupid guy and one more stupid girl looking at each other and realizing how totally in love they were, THE FIRST. FREAKING. TIME. THEY. EVER. SAW. EACH. OTHER.  I mean, I think it takes a little more than one swift glance for people to realize they're in love. I think they have to have a true conversation, get to know each other,and not just look at each other stupidly to know that they're head over heels.  Troubling, troubling, troubling. >.<

Anyway, I hope you understand what I'm trying to get across, and my mom's telling me to get off the computer, so bye! Have a fantabulous weekend.

SS #1: Writer's Block and Inspiration

Hello everyone! :)

 So if you recall I published a post a while ago, back in Late September (the days have passed unbelievably quickly!!) about something called "The Saturday Scoop".  I Have to unfortunately say that I have not followed up with my Promise that I included in that post and I'm SO sorry!! In case you forgot what The Saturday Scoop was, and want to know more about it, please click here. 

I Said that my first SS topic would be fangirling, but I have decided to file that subject away for later and focus on a different subject that Has been bugging me a lot lately: which is Writer's Block and Inspiration.  Definition of Writer's Block: "an inability to write".

An Inability to write... Curious, curious.  Now, let me say something that is particularly wrong with this statement: everyone can write.  For some people, it comes more naturally to them, and others struggle with writing. But everyone can DO it.  If they're passionate about writing, then they can write whatever the heck they want.  They just have to... write.

I Myself have descovered that writing comes at the strangest times.  When you want to write, you never can. You sit at the computer, looking at the screen blankly, not one single idea coming to mind, and the ones that do come to your mind seem bland, uninteresting, and cliche.  For Me, writing comes when it's a rainy day and there's a strange color in the sky, or when you're on an airplane looking down at the tiny world below you, or when you're reading a book and you suddenly realize that the two ends meet, or when you're on a rollercoaster feeling as if you might get sick.

So Now that we've established that Writer's Block is nonexistent, let me move into something that is quite related to writer's block: Inspiration.  If you have what is supposedly writer's Block, then you need inspiration ASAP.  How do you get inspiration? You Read.  You Watch.  You Listen.  There might be that girl you admire because she's not afraid to be out there, or there might be that author who manages to make words sound perfect and invincible and beautiful, or there might be that Math teacher who explains everything in a clear, calm voice and makes you feel relaxed when you were feeling panicked just moments ago.  Like writing can come to you at the strangest times, Inspiration can come to you at the strangest times.  It's an odd world, isn't it? But that's what makes writing beautiful. Inspiration.

I'm inspired every day.  I look at my mom, and my sister, and my brothers, and my dad, and even my dogs!  I look at my favorite authors and think, "I could be just like them someday".  And you CAN.  If you just sit down and write your heart out, or do whatever your heart out, you COULD be just like them someday.

Hey guys! So there is something I'm really excited about that I want to share with you all, and it's called... The Saturday Scoop! 

Introducing... The Saturday Scoop:
It's an idea I've been thinking about for a while now but never put it in action until now. Okay, ok...let me explain. Each Saturday (if life lets me), I'm going to post a Saturday Scoop post and rant about a random topic--any random topic. My first Saturday Scoop topic is going to be fangirling, which I will post today at some point. BUT, I would like to hear your suggestions for Saturday Scoop topics, so   please girls, suggest topics if you leave a comment! I am really excited about this and hope it will work out! I'm looking forward to doing this!
